A- Asian In/VISIBLE Station (AIS) is a project co-organized by ZeroStation (Vietnam). This project is combined with Asian Culture Station organized by Chiangmai Art Conversation (CAC), Thailand, and one station in Yangon, Myanmar become three stations in Southeast Asia that open for new cultural and art diagues to and within Asian. All the project are co-curated by Asian Center, Japan Foundation
Curator Nguyen Nhu Huy from ZeroStation, the chief curator of this project in Vietnam has conceptualize the idea In/visible for the term 2016-2017 of the project.
There are two ways of understanding this concept
1- In/VISIBLE means The visibility takes place by action. “IN” here represents an active action, so In/Visible means In Visible.
2- The word ‘invisible’ is also a core definition in terms of ZeroStation’s curatorial framework in this project. For this project, ZeroStation becomes a facilitating and network-connecting agent to bring together ideas and resources, action and vision within and beyond the various localities. In other words, ZeroStation will be decentered geographically, practically and conceptually all over city
B- How does this concept work?
ZeroStation will create 2 partner systems
1. Art Space Partnership in Asia:
This partnering system includes groups of artists and curators within the regions that will nominate and introduce their artistic representatives to Vietnam and vice versa. Those representatives will work and curate their show or project in Vietnam and vice versa. The foreign artists who work in Vietnam will be introduced to collaborate with the local artist and they will create their project as collaboration. They can interpret the term ‘In/VISIBLE’ in their own way, either as a reference or an analytical process. The artists / curators / artists collective who are involved in this project will define the term In/VISIBLE in their understanding, they can also refer or critique in their own way.
2. Local partnerships in HCMC
This partnering system includes groups of local artists and curators who will analyze and study the In/VISIBLE term for their idea development and use ZeroStation resource as a facilitator or a station for their research. These local partnerships are also arts spaces and advocating organizations, which focus on the specialized groups of audience who may not even know what contemporary art is; Yet may be attracted by contemporary art.
Working with ZeroStation, this partnership will be an advocacy to connect visions, thinking and knowledge of their region to the local audience in a specialized and more interactive approach. Through the creative and collaborative process, which might expose to multi-directional conflict during the making, it would open the possibilities of a definition of an Asia that is complex, messy, and full of anxiety, and full of hopes and promises; the Asia of the possibilities becomes visible
